Preventing cervical cancer is essential to a healthy sex life

As a sexuality expert, I don’t often talk with my patients about sexually transmitted infections (STIs). My work centers around helping people have sexually satisfying relationships. But in order for your sexual relationship to be satisfying, you and your parts must be healthy. And having a STI means that it’s not.

The CDC has recently updated its immunization guidelines and for the first time has recommended that young women between the ages of 19 and 26 receive the HPV vaccine to prevent cervical cancer. The same guidelines state that young men ages 9 to 26 may be offered the same vaccine to prevent genital warts.

The HPV vaccine (there are two currently available) protects against the two strains of the virus that causes 70% of cases of cervical cancer. This is a deadly form of cancer that is easily preventable through vaccination in part and also through regular Pap tests where pre-cancerous cells can be identified and treated.
When the vaccine was first approved, there was some controversy among some parents about vaccinating their daughters. Some suggested that this would encourage their young daughters to be sexually active! The same argument has been made about teaching teenagers about contraception and sex. I guess there is the risk now that these same parents will argue that vaccinating boys will encourage sexual activity!

Any and all initiatives to protect individuals against a preventable disease are a good thing. The CDC is recommending sound practice that will prevent heartache and tragedy for partners and families. If you think you need the vaccine, or have children in the recommended age group – talk to your primary care provider or your child’s pediatrician and get the vaccine. Your lives may depend on it!
